The action or process of making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many thin layers of a material in succession.

Create a process that will scan a 3D printed object, create a 3D digital rendering of it alongside an STL file then compare it to the original object and compare with accurracy. 

About the project

For our Senior design project we were tasked with developing a process or software to thoroughly scan a 3D printed object to create an accurate STL file, so it can be compared to the source to check for errors within the printing process.

Our Approach

Scanning Process (PolyCam)

  • Take multiple photos of the printed object at various angles and positions

  • Use PolyCam to stitch the photos together to create a 3D image

  • Create an DXF file from the scan and export it to AutoCad

3D Processing Software (AutoCad)

  • Import DXF file

  • Read in and compile the model, make any necessary adjustments

  •  Export and send the file in STL format to the Makerbot 3D printer

Analyze process

  •  Compare 3D print to original object

  • Determine how accurate the print is

  • Analyze entire process to improve next print

3D Printing (MakerBot)

  •  Select target from dashboard

  • Dissect the target into multiple layers

  • Print the scan layer by layer until the machine is finished
